creativity in technology published by daylon hicks

One could argue that technology is among the most creative disciplines within the arts, though of course that remains subjective. Anything that demands process and vulnerability can be considered art, the question lies in how that artistry is showcased through technology?

Electric scooters, AI glasses, and 3D printing, just a few examples of technologies that have become part of our daily lives. Yet what is often overlooked is the design within the technology itself. The design process is arguably the most essential factor, it shapes how we interact with these tools every day and determines whether they become seamlessly integrated into our routines. Beyond functionality, there is also value in exploring the creatives who harness technology as a medium, using it not just as a tool but as a canvas to push innovation, storytelling, and artistic expression forward.

Zoey Zhu’s approach to design is not only visually compelling but also redefines functionality through a creative lens. In her work at IDEO as well, there’s a clear sense of experimentation that gives her projects a distinctive energy and depth. ZZ pushes her experimentation in music by blending ambient sound with a technological edge, creating a unique and forward-thinking atmosphere in her work also felt through notes of moss. Sean Jones aka Humid Daze, showcases his creative vision by leveraging advanced motion design technologies in his work with Maven Creative, seamlessly blending design with innovation. Will Coyner has contributed to projects such as Across the Spider-Verse, Machine Zone, Dawngate and more using advanced digital tools as a concept artist and illustrator to design immersive worlds that’s realistic.

Sam Voong is an interdisciplinary designer whose work centers on experimentation across digital practices such as editorial design, typography, and art direction showcased in projects like Listening Garden (2024), Hands on Deco, and more. Ash Herr, also known as Empowa, showcases her understanding of technology by teaching it through visually engaging methods across socials while also applying these approaches within her own works. Tina Tarighian focuses on the future of AI and the fundmentals through presentations. Chia Amisola explores creative work in ways similar to ZZ, yet brings her own voice through design contributions at Figma and the release of her music. Both Tania Luo and Dev Makker leverage technology through 3D design, creating works that invite the human eye to explore that emphasizes the importance of being creative through technology.
